Honey FAQ – Apicultura

Honey FAQ

Currently, we have bee hives located in farms across Malaysia among the mountainous forested areas.

Apicultura’s products are not available for sale in Malaysia. To source for a honey to fit your needs, many considerations need to be taken into account. Time, effort, capital and resources just to find one on par is no easy feat. Further which, concerns on product adulterations, certifications, authenticity and effectiveness will still be prominent.

We guarantee our products are 100% natural; our certifications on this are on each product. If adding natural ingredients like Apple Vinegar, Royal Jelly, Black Propolis and Bee Venom are considered adulterated, then yes, we have “naturally adulterated” our honey to bring a wider range of health benefits to us!p>

Honey has a range of unique characteristics:
1. It crystalizes slowly over time or after most of the moisture has evaporated.
2. It creates a very fine layer of bubbly foam if you dip honeycomb into it a few times.
3. It creates a soft to medium “pop” sound when the lid of the honey bottle is opened after shaking it for a minute and then letting it rest for 15 minutes.
4. Its colour and taste changes with time due to honey fermentation.
5. It contains pollen which is a great vitamin source.
6. Apicultura’s honey is highly active due to the presence of active enzymes and good bacteria within. This may cause honey to leak out of the bottle occasionally.

It’s a good sign! Your honey is safe to consume and not flooded with pesticides. Honey is a simple food like any other fruit or vegetable. Insects are constantly looking for real food and not just sugar. They also consume carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins as well which can be found in honey.

What you see is not sucrose sugar but crystals formed by glucose molecules. Crystallization is a natural honey process. It first looks like tiny rocks, formed on the bottom of the honey bottle. In a few months you will see a thick layer of cloud when seen from afar. It does not interfere with the benefits as stated and it is safe to consume.

It is not wrong to put honey in the refrigerator if you are perfectly fine with Crystallization. Crystallization occurs faster in the refrigerator as it is constantly below 25° and it dries up the moisture.

If you taste sugar vs honey, you will find that honey is much sweeter! Sucrose which is sugar has complex sugar molecules unlike honey, which has simple sugar. When simple sugar touches our taste buds, we can taste the sweetness almost immediately as the molecules do not need to be broken down by our saliva enzymes before reaching our taste buds.

It is true that honey is a solution that reaches saturation point in sugar. Honey is denser and contains lower sugar contents than sugar. Even with same weight of sugar and honey, it has lesser calories and more trace minerals too. This also means that honey is more energy-lasting, easier to digest, and does not cause as big a spike in blood-sugar level as sugar.

Honey naturally ages faster than us. Fermentation is happening 24/7 within honey which changes the colour and taste within a few months.

We do not use other additives or syrups but just natural honey and ingredients. When pricing our products, we take into account considerations of harvesting time, manufacturing, tests, taxes, tariffs, shipping, warehousing and GST. Due to our meticulous considerations, we aim to not have any price increase over the next decade.

The main difference lies in the taste, smell, colour and nutrients. Wild Flower Honey is a compilation of honey obtained from a wide variety of flowers and will slightly vary in every batch. Single type flower honey, also known as monofloral honey, is harvested with hives placed in the heart of a 3 kilometres range where the same breed of plants or trees grow.

Honey does not have an expiry date when it is placed in glass bottles and it is real honey. Honey has a well-known time-free shelf life since ancient times. Some of our products may have “Best Before Date” to cater for retail outlets’ requirements. Do note that this is not a mandatory requirement for honey.

It is best to place your honey at any outdoor area not near any heat source or sunlight. It also does not need to be refrigerated.

We are glad to know you treasure our honey. We recommend you to place your bottle in a Ziplock bag and simply zip it up. As Singapore is humid and hot, we discourage placing your bottle on a plate of water which will encourage mosquitoes breeding.

Just consume it as per usual or mix with room temperature water to consume. We discourage heating up the bottle since we are unable to control the heat to be constantly below 40 degree, which may result in a loss in enzymes and good bacteria, effectively, its nutrients.

Honey is natural and every harvest will be different as it is not man-made.
