A common name of Stingless Bee is Sugarbag Bee. Their name is derived from the nature of their character. They do not sting, and they store their honey in pots near the extremities of their home. Its other names include Meliponine, Kelulut, Klanceng Bee.
Stingless Bee’s size is 2-5 times smaller than regular honey bees, which allows them to build their home inside a tree trunk, in the gap of a rock cavity, or even underground beneath a tree. Sadly, Stingless Bee Honey and Propolis are very limited due to their population strength which can be as low as just 200 bees in a colony.
The Stingless Bee is the only bee that is mini enough to nibble into the deepest part of the flower for the purest nectars. Because the nectar from these parts are not easily accessible, the nectar content will slowly but surely accumulate until a Stingless Bee harvests it. Hence, the taste and contents of the honey produced from these nectars are denser and richer than regular honey. These honeys are stored in clusters of small resin pot built by Stingless Bees also known as propolis pots. These pots vary from light gold to dark-brown color depending on the species that built it.
There are over 500 species of Stingless Bees that could be found in Malaysia. Species identified by experts are Geniotrigona thoracica, Heterotrigona itama, Hypotrigona scintillans, Tetragonilla atripes, Trigona itama, Trigona thorasica, Trigona laeviceps,Trigona terminata, Trigona scintillans, Trigona miniate, Trigona minima. Most native bee keepers in Malaysia do not speak or write in English. Hence, limited information on Stingless Bee Honey makes it an undiscovered gem.
Rearing and maintaining a colony of Stingless Bees can be 10 times more challenging than regular bees. Stingless Bees do not have stings to protect their hive from other inhabiting insects in their vicinity who frequently rob their honey bank. Their Queen does not hold any loyalty to anyone, or any place and their pattern is far more unpredictable than any you have ever seen from other bees. Moreover, their size and color allow them to blend with the surroundings, thus, making it harder to spot them.
Apicultura’s Stingless Bee Honey has a distinctive prune-like tingly taste, remarkably smoother and more liquid form. Stingless Bees do not produce much honey like regular honey bees. During monsoon and rainy season, we will stop honey harvesting so that the bees have enough honey to serve their daily needs. During some months, honey harvest can drop to as low as 30ml, up to 100ml per month.
